Why is the God topic such a hot issue?

God and religion tend to be hot topics in philosophy. Without arguing about what God or religion is or ought to be, respond to this question: Why do inquiries / discussions about God and religion get so heated?

There are a number of different reasons.

1. People like to be right.
2. People don't like it when they feel others are wrong (I fall into this category)
3. Our society doesn't allow people to mature past a high-school maturity level, so people get physically angry when someone argues with them
4. No one likes their opinions challenged

The reason this particular subject gets so heated is because we're not simply debating a philosophy that doesn't affect our lives, we're debating a very common idea that people follow religiously (yay for word play).

People take the God topic seriously because God does shape alot of a persons philosophy. Believing in a God and a devil, a heaven or a hell, takes a complete toll on our views on even Socartes works or Platos. We could argue with them because certain things they believe to be true discard truths in the name of God. Believing in God is even a deeper subject because there is the issue of whether Jesus Christ is his son or not. And for those who do believe that and the others who dont at all is seperates those even more in perspective of why we are here on earth. For the Christians, they believe we are here to fulfill our God given purpose. To live for Christ Jesus and spread his gospel. So, the question that many philosophers have of why we are here is answered for the believers in Christ. Philosophy is determined alot based upon the persons personal views on deity and his placement in our lives.
